Nominations are now open for the People of the Year Awards 2015.

Organised annually by Rehab, the awards provide a unique opportunity for the Irish public to honour those who have made a real difference to people's lives, whether as unsung heroes or household names.

The categories are International Person of the Year, Community Group of the Year, and Sports Person of the Year as well as the more general People of the Year Awards for achievements across a range of areas.

"We are very proud to once again broadcast the People of the Year Awards," said Adrian Lynch, Channel Controller, RTÉ One said.

"These everyday heroes represent Irish people at our very best and, rightly, make us feel proud."

Mo Flynn, CEO, Rehab, added that the awards "give us as a country the opportunity to honour these people, to recognise and value their contribution, and to show them that what they did changed lives."

Today, previous award winners Rory O'Neill (aka Panti Bliss), Joanne O'Riordan, Fiona Doyle, Tomi Reichental and Daráine Mulvihill joined together to encourage people to nominate everyday heroes and heroines.

So if you know a friend, colleague, sibling or cousin who has done an extraordinary thing over the last year, simply fill in the short nomination form on or visit the Facebook page for more information.

The People of the Year Awards office can also be contacted on 01 2057397 if you want to make a nomination by phone.

All the winners will be finalised by a panel of adjudicators.

The closing date for nominations is Monday September 14 and the awards will be broadcast live on RTÉ One on Saturday December 5.
