A pensioner died and her sister was injured following a head-on collision between a car and a truck in north Cork.

The accident, at Glen South, Naan, Kanturk, occurred shortly before 12 noon today.

A 78 year old woman suffered multiple serious injuries in the collision.

She was pronounced dead at the scene by a local GP before she could be transferred to hospital.

A 75 year old woman, believed to be a sister of the deceased, was injured in the collision and was transferred to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

Her condition is understood to be stable.

Both women were occupants of the hatchback car.

The 33-year-old truck driver was uninjured but was treated at the scene for shock.

Gardai closed the road, between Nadd and Banteer, to allow for a detailed examination of the scene by forensic collision investigators.

Local diversions remain in place.

Gardai also appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the movement of the vehicles involved to contact Mallow or Kanturk Garda Stations.

The deceased is from the area and is understood to have been travelling home from a shopping trip when the tragedy occurred.

Gardai declined to confirm the identity of the deceased until all relatives have been notified.

Weather conditions may have played a role in the tragedy with heavy rain showers and spot-flooding of some roads around the north Cork area.
