A father-of-two who bravely fought against an aggressive form of brain cancer has passed away.

David McClean's family were left heartbroken when he was diagnosed with a grade 4 glioblastoma in September 2016, just two years after having a tumour removed from his leg.

He was told by doctors in Belfast that his brain tumours were inoperable and he was given 12 months to live, but he refused to accept the bleak prognosis.

David, who was from Ballymena in Co Antrim, travelled to University College London Hospital, where he underwent a seven-and-a-half hour operation.

But the building contractor was then told that the tumours would start growing back immediately.

He knew his only chance was to receive immunotherapy treatment, which costs more than £40,000 per session.

After a crowdfunding campaign and generous help from friends and family, he began treatment last February.

He was able to return to work in June.

However, his family took to social media to reveal the news that David had died in the early hours of yesterday. They said: "It's with great sadness that we have had to announce that our beloved David passed away in the early hours of this morning, being held by his family and being told how much he was loved.

"David retained his sunny personality until the end, always smiling and telling the nurses they were too kind and that he was giving them a lot of bother.

"He was described by everyone, including medical staff, as a true gentleman.

"David you will be forever in our hearts, always loved and sorely missed, Your loving wife Dawn, and children Charlotte & Christopher. xx"

Dawn said: "My darling David you have gone too soon. I will always love you and will see you in heaven. Till then I know you will be watching over all of us. Love you forever."
