THE meerkat family at Dublin Zoo are keeping their zoo keepers in the dark.

Two pups were born just over a month ago to add to the growing family. Yet zoo staff don't know the exact date the two females were born because the mother keeps her babies underground for a while after giving birth.

Team leader Eddie O'Brien said they suspected they might see new faces when the eldest female disappeared for a while.

"The mother dug a secret burrow and stayed underground for a few days," he said.

"After a while we heard special exchange calls between the female and male, indicating that something was definitely happening."

The newest additions of the meerkat clan, which are a type of mongoose, will have to compete for their parents' attention as they move in with 12 other brothers and sisters.

After first arriving at the zoo three years ago, the gang have become a popular attraction for the hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
