Motorist (66) taken to hospital after car crosses central barrier of motorway

A man (66) has been taken to hospital after his car collided with the central barrier of the M1 southbound this morning and ended up in the northbound lane.

The incident happened at approximately 6.30am this morning.

According to gardai, the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was travelling southbound when he struck the central barrier of the M1.

The vehicle ended up on the northbound lane of the motorway close to Junction 16.

The motorway was closed northbound for a time this morning but has since fully reopened.

Gardai have confirmed that the driver of the car has been taken to hospital as a precaution.
