Michael Devoy: shot up to four times at close range with a handgun

One senior source said the force now directs more resources to examining fatal road accidents than to murders. So far this year no charges have been brought in relation to gang-related murders in Dublin.

The murders this year are:

Jan 20: Michael Devoy (42) shot dead at Foxhill Road, near the Bohernabreena Road in Tallaght.

Feb 13: James Talbot (46) shot dead outside his home in Lucan.

Mar 15: Stephen 'Dougie' Moran (46) shot dead near his home at Clondalkin.

Mar 20: Declan Smyth (31) shot dead as he left his daughter at a creche in Donaghmede.

Apr 15: John O'Regan (48) shot dead in Ballymun.

Apr 24: Eoin O'Connor (32) of Kilbarron Avene, Coolock and Anthony Keegan (33) north inner Dublin were both shot dead in Cavan. They bodies were hidden and found a month later.

May 4: Wayne Zambra (39) shot dead while visiting relatives in Drimnagh

July 30: Paul Gallagher (26) from Donaghmede, found shot dead in farmland in Co Meath

Aug 19: Andy Connors (45) shot dead at his home in Saggart.

Sept 6: Gerard Kavanagh (46) from south inner Dublin shot dead at a bar in Elviria, Costa del Sol

Sept 25: Benny Whitehouse (35) shot dead at Balbriggan.
