'Model prisoner' Graham Dwyer plans to study for doctorate in prison with taxpayers' money
Graham Dwyer is planning to get a doctorate behind bars with taxpayers' money, has access to his own laptop, and enjoys a private cell with a personal shower in prison.
These details have all been revealed in a demanding letter written by Dwyer to prison bosses at Cloverhill prison and seen by the Irish Daily Star.
The Star reports that Dwyer (42) wrote the letter after his girlfriend, Victoria Andreenkova (38), was banned from seeing him after falling out with prison authorities.
Dwyer is serving a life sentence in prison after he was convicted in March of the murder of childcare worker Elaine O'Hara on August 22, 2012. It was proven that he stabbed her to death for his own sexual gratification.
The letter, which was written on June 18, demands that prison authorities allow Ms Andreenkova to visit Dwyer in Prison, after she was banned for being ‘verbally abusive’ to prison staff at Cloverhill.
“I learned from my girlfriend what what actually had happened, and that no abusive language was used,” reads the letter.
“There was an issue concerning changing clothes that contained metal and an issue with the drug dog.”
In the letter, Dwyer labels the ban “unfair, heavy handed, and unfairly denies me contact with someone very close and supportive.”
Dwyer also talks about being a ‘model prisoner’ and reveals his status in prison and the comforts he enjoys:
“I have also enjoyed and single cell and now even have a shower in my cell.
“I would like to perhaps, one day, upgrade my level 9 qualifications to level 10,” he writes.
He claims that he wants to resolve the issue without “resorting to legal action as it would no doubt attract further adverse publicity and unnecessary cost.”
“I am currently involved in four separate legal actions and do not need the additional stress of a fifth,” he wrote.
‘The spark is off'
The ban on Ms Andreenkova visiting was lifted soon after the letter was sent. However, she hasn’t been to see Dwyer recently as they are currently ‘taking a break’ while she thinks about her situation.
Last week, she told 96fm’s Opinion Line that the ‘spark is off’ in their relationship.
We didn't see each other for six weeks and the spark is a bit off actually. I don't know how we should progress further with this," she said.
"I haven't really told him that. I don't want to hurt his feelings.
"I do feel a bit left out of the whole thing. I feel very hurt by everything," she said.
