A couple was found safe and well last night after they became separated from their group while walking up Cork mountains.

The male and female in their 50s and 60s were on a walking tour of the Ballyhoura Mountains with three other members when they went missing at around 9:30pm.

A search was co-ordinated by the Valentia Coast Guard on request from the gardaí, and involved the Mallow Search and Rescue Team.

A helicopter was on standby to help in the search but wasn't required.

At 1am, the couple were found safe and well and required no medical assistance.
