A three year old managed to avoid injury after starting a car and crashing the vehicle into the back of a truck.

Jayden Gorman Dempsey, from Carlow, had been in the care of her grandmother Margaret Dempsey at John Sweeney Park when the incident occurred.

The little girl took the keys of the family car and climbed over the garden wall to access the car and start it.

However, the vehicle moved forward without control and was then trapped by the rear lift of a nearby truck.

When efforts by her panicked grandmother to release Jayden failed, a workman in the area came to the child’s rescue.

John Mulhall,  previously a member of the Red Cross, had been installing insulation in the housing estate when the accident happened.

He managed to start the car and free Jayden who was later taken to St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny for observation.

Jayden’s mother Lisa Gorman has thanked Mr Mulhall for his quick reaction.
