A pilot walked away from a plane crash with just minor cuts and bruises after a miraculous escape on an island off north-west Donegal.

The Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) has launched an investigation into the incident on Tory Island on Monday evening.

The pilot, from Brazil, was in a micro-light plane when he lost power.

He managed to crash-land the plane close to the island’s lighthouse.

King of Tory Island, Patsy Dan Rodgers, said local people rushed to help the pilot but he was able to walk free from the wreckage.

"He was a wee bit shaken but that was all,” said Patsy Dan, one of 150 permanent residents of the island 11kms off the coast.

“It all happened very quickly and thankfully he wasn’t badly hurt. Some local people went to help him but he was able to walk away from it.”

Locals helped gather the remains of the light aircraft and brought out to the local harbour where it was collect by ferry and brought to the mainland at Magheraroarty.

The AAIU said it had now been made aware of the crash and were investigating it.
