Gardaí are hunting a suspected drink driver who ploughed their car into a wall before fleeing - leaving behind an empty bottle of vodka.

Pictures of the crash were posted to Facebook by officers in Co Kerry in a bid to catch the driver.

It is believed that the motorist lost control of his Renault Scenic near Ardfert in Co Kerry on new Year's eve at approximately 10.45pm.

The driver had left the scene prior to the arrival of Gardaí.

In a post officers said: "Witnesses at the scene have described the driver as being in a highly intoxicated condition."

A spokesperson added:  "The attached photos tell their own story."

Gardaí have appealed for anybody with information to contact Tralee Garda Station on 066 7102300 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666111.

Previously it was revealed that the number of people caught drink-driving in 2016 was expected to reach almost 8,000 by New Year’s Eve.
