A man is battling for his life after a serious assault at his apartment over the weekend.

The 31-year-old, who has not been named by gardaí, was found unconscious on the floor of the apartment on Mill Street in Tullow, Co Carlow on Sunday night.

Gardaí believe the victim of this serious assault could have been unconscious for up to 19 hours before he was eventually found and rushed to St Luke's Hospital at 10pm.

It is understood he had made a phone call at about 2.20am on Sunday and it is believed that a short time later he was assaulted.

The young man was found by his traumatised mother after he failed to turn up at her home for lunch which had been pre-arranged.

However, it was around 10pm before she managed to get a key holder for the Mill Street apartment where she found him on the floor.

Emergency services were immediately called and the man was taken to hospital where he remains in ICU.

Gardaí are looking for anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity around the Mill Street area to contact them on 059 9151222.
