A man has died following a single vehicle accident in west Cork.

The accident occurred on the N71 Bandon to Clonakilty Road near Gaggin shortly before 7am when a car ploughed into a ditch.

No other vehicle was involved.

Gardaí immediately closed the road between Gaggin and Cashelmore with local diversions being implemented.

A stop and go system was later put in place.

Emergency services attended the scene but the man was pronounced dead before he could be transferred to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

It is unclear if the man died as a result of the impact as his car struck the ditch or whether he had been taken ill before the collision occurred.

The deceased is understood to be in his 40s and from Cork city.

A full post mortem examination is scheduled to be conducted at CUH to determine the precise cause of the man's death.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact wither Bandon or Clonakilty Garda Stations.
