A man has died after a shooting at a church hospital in Limerick City

Gardaí in Roxboro were called the Church of University Hospital Limerick in Raheen, Co Limerick at 2.50am after receiving reports of a shooting.

They arrived to find a man in his 60s who had died from suspected gunshot injuries.

The deceased was moved to the adjacent University Hospital Limerick.

The scene has been preserved and the investigation is ongoing.

Gardai are examining if it is a personal tragedy.

The victim is believed to be from the Limerick area and one source said that he had been receiving treatment for a serious illness in the hospital.

A post-mortem will take place on Thursday.
