A man has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after a three-car crash involving a Garda car.

Three people were taken to hospital and three cars were extensively damaged in the incident, which occurred on the N2 near Moyles in Co Monaghan at around 11.30pm last night.

A garda spokesperson told independent.ie that the garda patrol car was dealing with a broken-down car on the hard shoulder before the accident. The third car crashed into the back of the garda car, causing the pile-up.

“The third car collided into the back of the patrol car which in turn caused it to collide into the back of the other car,” the spokesperson said.

“A man was arrested on suspicion of drink driving but he was released later without charge.”

Gardai say investigations are ongoing and they have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

The Garda Ombudsman is also investigating the crash.
