Man (60) killed in morning road crash
A motorist in his early 60s has been killed in a road accident.
The man died when the car he was driving crashed about five miles from Dundalk, Co Louth on the Castleblaney road at about 7am.
The accident takes the road death toll for the year to 123 and comes after a 92-year-old woman died following a collision involving a car on the Navan Road in Dublin.
Maureeen Creaner was knocked down while walking on the road at about 8.15am on Sunday morning and died later in hospital.
It is understood she lived close to where the accident occurred and after she had been at Mass in the Church of Our Lady Help of Christians.
Priests offered prayers at subsequent masses and appealed for parishioners to take care on the roads.
A 39-year-old man was arrested following the accident and released without charge and gardai said a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Ms Creaner's death took the death toll for pedestrians killed on the country's roads to 18 this year.
Gardai appealed for witnesses to both accidents.
