A 57-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a failed bomb bid on a Northern Ireland police officer.

The suspect is being questioned about the discovery of an Under Vehicle Improvised Explosive Device attached to the serving officer's vehicle in the village of Eglinton on the outskirts of Londonderry last week. The unexploded bomb was made safe by Army Technical Officers.

The man was arrested in the Lurgan area of Co Armagh this morning.

Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) detective chief inspector Gareth Talbot said: "The man has been taken to the Serious Crime Suite at Antrim Police Station where he is assisting police with their inquiries."

The attack has been blamed on dissident republicans opposed to the peace process.
