A 34-year-old man was seriously injured after he was assaulted with what he believes was a machete.

The incident involving another man occurred on the Dublin road, Dundalk around 11pm on Saturday night.

The man - who received a serious injury to his sternum/chest area - is currently being treated in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

Gardai are following a definite line of enquiry and have preserved the area on the Dublin road.

They have also preserved the house the man made his way to in nearby Mullagharlin Park.

A Garda spokesman said efforts are continuing to locate the second man involved.

Gardai have appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have CCTV related to it to contact gardai in Dundalk.
