A 33-year-old man is in a critical condition after an attack in Dublin city centre last night.

The victim suffered serious head injuries in an attack at Aston Quay at 9.30pm.

He is believed to have been badly beaten in an assault.

The Westmeath native was rushed to St James’s Hospital where he is today reported to be in a critical condition.

Gardai believe the incident occurred on the road on Aston Quay.

The suspect is a man in his 20s or 30s, who gardai have described as well-built with dark hair.

It is believed the attacker was wearing a light coloured t-shirt, grey hoody top with white writing on the front and grey tracksuit bottoms.

Prior to the attack the suspect removed his hoody and t-shirt, gardai say. He put these clothes back on following the attack.

The suspect fled the scene in the direction of Westmoreland Street in the company of two other males who were wearing dark tracksuits.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information, particularly those who were in the vicinity of Aston Quay/Westmoreland Street between 9.15 and 9.45pm last night to contact them at Pearse Street Garda Station on 01 6669000, The Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111 or any Garda Station.

No arrests have been made yet, but gardai are viewing CCTV images and interviewing witnesses in an effort to establish the sequence of events that led up to the attack.
