Man (31) dies after early morning city centre assault, murder probe launched

Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of a 31-year-old man.

The man died in hospital from injuries sustained in an altercation near the Northern Whig bar in the Donegal Street, Belfast shortly before 1am.

A 30 year old man was arrested at the scene and he remains in police custody at this time.

Detective Chief Inspector Geoffrey Boyce of the Police Service of Northern Ireland is leading the investigation.

"We are aware that were quite a number of people in the Donegal Street area at the time this incident occurred and we are keen to speak with as many witnesses and passers by as possible," he said.
