GARDAI have appealed for information about an incident in Cork city centre that left a man with critical head injuries.

The 30-year-old man is understood to have been involved in the incident at 2.30am on Sunday on Oliver Plunkett Street.

He suffered a head injury but was able to leave the scene.

However, he later complained of feeling ill and was rushed to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

He underwent emergency surgery and his condition is described as critical.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses to the incident which occurred sometime between 2am and 2.45am.

Detectives are trying to determine the precise circumstances in which the man was hurt.

It occurred not far from a popular city centre nightclub and the area was busy with students celebrating their return to college.
