A major search and rescue operation took place in Howth after reports of a car entering the water this evening.

The sighting was reported to officials at around 5.15pm.

Members of the RNLI, Dublin Fire Brigade and garda water unit attended the scene.

It is understood the driver of the car was female.

Authorities are treating the incident as a personal tragedy.
