A thrilled family stored a Lotto ticket worth €6.1 million with their guns for safety.

The delighted winners - who want to remain anonymous -  revealed the day they bought the golden ticket was extra special as it was also when their first grandchild was born.

The family of six were one of two winners of Saturday's €12.3 million jackpot and collected their half of the fortune today.

The father said he has been playing the Lotto every week since it started 30 years ago and purchased his winning ticket at the Topaz Service Station on the Dublin Road in Athlone, Co Westmeath last week.

He said that when he saw his numbers has been picked he knew the perfect place for the precious ticket was their gun cabinet.

He said: "Sure I could think of no better place to leave it!

"I dared hope it was us, but when we checked the winning numbers we realised our dreams had come true. We were over the moon."

He said he called his wife who was in work and told her they'd netted €500.
