PASSENGERS miraculously escaped injury in a head-on collision between a school bus and a car in west Cork.

The accident, which occurred around 8.30am, took place on the R591 Toormore-Durrus road on the Mizen Peninsula.

A bus, carrying schoolchildren to classes in local schools, was in collision with a car at the townland of Argideen.

The accident resulted in the entire road being blocked.

There were no reports of any injuries. However, both drivers are understood to have been treated at the scene for shock.

Gardaí have asked motorists to avoid the area until the work of the emergency services is concluded.

Garda accident scene investigators are currently examining the road to determine the precise cause of the accident.

The road is the main access point for people living in Goleen, Toormore, Blairs Cove and Durrus to both Bantry and Crookhaven.
