A lucky Louth husband and wife had a very happy start to the week when they collected their €500,000 EuroMillions winning on Monday.

The couple, who want to remain anonymous, laughed that it was second time lucky for them as they thought they had actually scooped the jackpot that was worth a staggering €88.5 million earlier this year.

Speaking at the National Lottery's Dublin headquarters, the thrilled husband said: "We thought that we had won the EuroMillions jackpot of €88.5 million in January.

"I bought a ticket in the winning Applegreen Service Station in Lusk in Dublin and I was absolutely convinced that I had won. I had the ticket for days and I was too afraid to check it. Once I heard that the winners came forward, I promised that I would be next to win big,"

They bought their golden Quick Pick ticket  at Dunnes Stores, Ard Easmuinn in Dundalk, Co. Louth on Monday 20 March.

While the pair are still getting their heads around their life-changing win, they do plan to treat themselves.

The winning wife said: "We still haven’t told anybody in our family, including our kids.

"We are still coming to terms with the realisation that we now have a half a million euro in the bank so we need to take some time before we start making any plans."

They added: "For the last ten years, we have spent our holidays on staycation in Ireland so I think it’s time to treat ourselves to a nice sun holiday once we have paid off all of our bills. It’s a great comfort to know that we will be finally free of our mortgage for the rest of our days."

Meanwhile time is ticking for the winner of the Christmas Millionaire Raffle, as they've just FOUR days left to claim their prize.

The deadline is March 31 and punters are reminded that the ticket's number is 179740 and it was purchased at the Topaz Service Station on Lower Tivoli Road in Cork on 21 December 2016.
