A lucky couple used their children's ages and a significant event when choosing their Lotto numbers - leading them to win €2.9 million.

The couple, who are from the midlands, collected their winnings today.

They shared a €5.8m jackpot with another couple from Dun Laoghaire.

The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, have been playing Lotto Online since 2014 - and their reasons are quite simple.

"I was fed up losing my tickets and forgetting to check them so I decided that playing online was the way to go – and I’m very glad I did," said the lucky husband over a glass of champagne in National Lottery offices.

"Our numbers were made up of our children’s ages, and a significant family event," he added.

Not surprisingly, Ireland's newest millionaires have some plans as to how they are going to spend their winnings.

"Looking after our family; and we’d love a really fun family holiday somewhere beautiful like the Seychelles, or the Maldives, somewhere with a private beach! And we’d also like to plan a trip to India," said the lucky wife.

The Dun Laoghaire winners collected their cheque on Monday - and said a shopping spree in Marks & Spencers was in order.

Tomorrow night's jackpot is worth €2.5 million.
