You can keep your raincoat and umbrella at the ready for the week.

Tuesday is set to be the best day in an otherwise wet and cold week, according to Met Éireann.

Forecaster John Eagleton told today: “It won’t be a great week with very average weather conditions and showers for most of the week.”

Temperatures are set to fall between average and below average, while regular showers of rain are also expected.

This afternoon, there will be outbreaks of rain over parts of Ulster and north Leinster, scattered heavy showers and a risk of thunder.

Tomorrow is set to be a cloudy but dry day with some light showers. Wednesday will be cool and windy with a mix of bright spells and heavy showers that will continue into Thursday.

Cold and unsettled weather is forecast for Friday with rain moving in gradually from the Atlantic and turning heavy at times.
