An Irishman has been arrested in Colombia after police allegedly caught him recording his sexual abuse of a young girl.

According to the 50-year-old Irish citizen was caught after police received a tip-off that he was in a room in Medellin with the 12-year-old girl and a woman.

A member of the public had reportedly spotted the abuse through a window in the apartment.

When they arrived at the room in the upmarket El Poblado district, police found the man allegedly abusing the girl while the 19-year-old woman was taking photographs.

The man and woman were arrested while the young girl was taken into care. Police are now seeking to reunite her with her family.

The Irish Sun is reporting that police seized a pack of condoms, two mobile phones and a camera.

Photographs of the suspect and the items seized were released by police.

Medellin mayor Federico Gutiérrez told the newspaper: “When police arrived, the girl was engaged in sexual acts with the man, who has been handed over to the public prosecutor’s office.

“I would like to thank the commitment of the men and women of the police, who continue to fight the sexual abuse and exploitation of children and adolescents in the city of Medellin. The National Police is prepared to end this abuse.”

The Irish man is one of three people arrested last week on suspicion of child sex offences in Medellin.
