Irish fisherman airlifted from trawler in medical emergency

Valentia coastguard are currently coordinating a medical evacuation, as the skipper of fishing trawler is suffering from a suspected case of appendicitis.

The 39-year-old male is Irish and is the skipper of the ‘Ellie Adhamh’ vessel.

The ship was 120 miles off the coast of Dingle, Co Kerry, when he fell ill.

Emergency services said they were first notified of the incident shortly before 1.30pm, and helicopters from Waterford and Sligo were deployed to the scene.

The patient is due to land at Shannon Airport shortly and he will then be transferred to Limerick hospital.

There are six other crew members on board and they are now returning to land.  It is expected that they will arrive at Castletownbere tomorrow morning.
