IRA gun-runner John Joseph Carr was involved in a plot to kidnap the Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VIII.

The plot was hatched in 1922 to use the p rince as a bargaining chip to secure the release of IRA members Reginald Dunne and Joseph O'Sullivan.

Both men were in prison awaiting execution for the murder of British general Sir Henry Wilson, who had been acting as a security advisor to the Northern Ireland government.

Efforts to save Dunne and O'Sullivan involved both sides of the Treaty divide. But the kidnap plans were dropped after a policeman noticed Carr's accent while he was checking on the Prince's movements on the Isle of Wight.
