A young woman has alleged a man tried to coerce her into his car after he stopped to ask for directions.

The incident occurred in Athy yesterday afternoon on Green Alley near the town's garda station.

A car being driven by a man approached the young lone female as she was walking along the street.

It's believed there may have been a number of other individuals in the back of the car at the time.

They stopped and asked her for directions to the Credit Union at which point one male got out of the car and told her to get in.

She fled the scene and ran into a nearby garden centre where she raised the alarm.

The vehicle has been described as a white BMW with tinted windows.

The man has been described as being in his 20s with large tattoos.

A family member of the girl has said the she is "doing fine after what was a traumatic experience for her."

"Just want to make people aware to be vigilant of this man. It could be anyone's daughter," they added.

Gardai say they were aware of an incident where a woman was approached by a car but have said that no formal complaint has been made.
