The coastguard helicopter has been dispatched to assist an injured crew member aboard a Russian fishing vessel around 200 miles off the south coast.

The alarm was raised by the vessel around 3.45pm this afternoon. Rescue helicopter 115 has been scrambled and was being refuelled at Castletwonbere helipad earlier this evening.

A coastguard spokesperson said the delay in getting out to the stricken crewman was because the vessel was so far out at sea when the alarm was first raised.

The vessel has been progressing towards the south coast this evening and is now within reach of the coastguard helicopter.

The helicopter will be escorted out by Air Corps jets stationed at Baldonnel aerodrome.

It is believed the man has sustained a broken arm and some other injuries and may need to be winched up to safety.

The spokesperson said the situation would be assessed when the crews reached the vessel.
