Over 5,000 customers were left without power last night following an ESB outage in Dublin.

A 'large fault' in the network affected homes and businesses in the Lucan and Clondalkin area of Dublin around 8.30pm.

While the issue was resolved for thousands of customers within one of two hours, some were left in the dark until after midnight.

"We apologise for the loss of supply. We are currently working to repair a fault and will restore power as quickly as possible," a spokesperson said yesterday evening.

The network's official Twitter account kept customers updated with progress regularly throughout the night.

"We have restored supply to nearly  2k customers in #Dublin West we continue to work to get everyone  back  as quickly and safely as possible," one tweet read.

Many found humour in the situation and took the opportunity to interact with the ESB spokesperson/people.

"Do yous need a hand? I have no electrical engineering experience but I'm not really up to anything else at the moment....," Shane Keena offered via tweet.

"Thank you for the offer but maybe stick to the shadow puppets for the moment Apologies again," was the response from ESB.
