Homes evacuated as pipe bomb explodes in front garden

A number of houses were evacuated in a housing estate when a pipe bomb exploded early this morning.

The bomb detonated in the front garden of a family home in Rockfield Manor, Dundalk, at approximately 215am.

Gardaí sought the services of the army bomb disposal unit to deal with the incident.

The home where the device exploded and several nearby houses were evacuated.

A garda spokesperson confirmed that the site was declared safe by 630am.

No injuries were reported and no damage was caused to property.
