Homes evacuated as bomb found near housing estate

A bomb was discovered near a housing estate in Co Kildare this evening.

The army bomb disposal team was called when an improvised explosive device (IED) was found in the vicinity of Townparks, Athy.

Gardai requested the services of the explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team, who arrived on scene at 6.05pm.

A number of houses were evacuated, roads in the area were closed and a cordon was put in place while the incident was ongoing.

The IED was made safe at the scene and removed to a secure military location where it was confirmed to be viable.

The scene was declared safe at 6.53pm and evidence was handed over to the gardai for investigation.
