A HELICOPTER rescue of a couple stranded on a Co Donegal mountainside had to be abandoned this evening due to dense fog.

The man and woman, both in their 40s, were climbing Muckish this afternoon when they got lost.

The couple were located in the dark shortly before 6pm, two hours after the alarm was raised.

The man injured a leg whilst being escorted off the mountain and the Coast Guard 118 helicopter was despatched to help but the crew had to abandon the mission because of the foggy weather conditions.

Donegal Mountain Rescue Team sent a second rescue party to the scene and the man was brought down from the mountain around 9pm on a stretcher.
