A man in his 40s has died following a fire at a house in Co Kildare.

The alarm was raised in Carbury at around 3.30am this morning.

Several units from Kildare Fire Service battled the blaze at the large two story family home for a number of hours.

Gardai at Leixlip have launched an investigation in the cause of the inferno.

However, a spokesperson has said the incident is not being treated as suspicious at this stage.

Locals in the area have expressed their grief surrounding the tragedy.

"Heartbreaking,"wrote one woman on social media.

"My neighbours.  Heartbreaking to see his family standing at gate. They could do nothing. Another tradegy for Carbury. RIP," she added.

The man's remains are believed to be currently at the scene.  They will be removed later today to Naas General Hospital where a post-mortem examination is expected to take place.

Anyone who may have any information surrounding the fire is asked to contact Leixlip Garda station at (01) 666 7882.
