This pooch had a lucky escape after eagle-eyed shoppers spotted him locked in a car at a busy shopping centre during the hot spell this afternoon.

Gardaí have issued a fresh warning to animal owners about the dangers of leaving your dog in the car during this week's high temperatures after the latest incident.

Officers tweeted a picture of the dog and told how they were informed of a lone animal spotted in a car in Dublin this afternoon.

"He was ok after a drink! Never lock animals in cars," said the twitter post on the Garda info twitter page.

Animals are often left in cars and temperatures can climb quickly even if the windows are open slightly, "It is very, very hot so obviously dogs in cars is a no, even putting your dog in the car to go to the park is not OK," Gillian Bird of the DSPCA told

The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has told the public to be vigilant.

"If you do see an animal trapped in a hot vehicle please take down the registration number and contact An Garda Síochána or the National Animal Helpline."
