A man has died after a wall collapsed on a construction site in Waterford city this afternoon.

The man (20) suffered fatal injuries during the work place accident at approximately 3.30pm on The Quay in the city.

He was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Waterford but was dead on arrival.

The man was working in the area when the accident happened.

Separate investigations have been launched by gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority.

It is understood that the young man was carrying out construction work an old bank building on Parnell Street when the tragedy happened.

Local councillor Adam Wyse (FF) said: “My thoughts go out to the young man’s friends and family at this awful time, as well as his colleagues who would have witnessed what happened.

“He was a young man, out there trying to earn a living and further himself, and for something like this to happen just before Christmas is absolutely tragic.

“We don’t know much about the accident itself at this stage, but I hope all the safety protocols were in place and that they will be in future to ensure that this never happens again.

“We’ve had a lot of tragic cases in Co Waterford lately involving young people- not to focus to much on the age but there have been a lot of tragic deaths involving people in their 20s.

“Again my heartfelt sympathies go out to the man’s family and friends at such a tragic time.
