Heavy rain, with a chance of hail and thundery downpours, is forecast for parts of the country today.

In case you didn't know, today is May 19th and we're officially in the summer.

But you wouldn't think it looking at today's Met Eireann forecast.

It will be cool and windy today, with sunny spells and occasional heavy showers, some of which will be hail and thundery downpours, Met Eireann have warned.

The good news is that most of these showers will have cleared by this evening with temperatures ranging between 10 and 13 degrees.

Tonight will be dry, with a few scattered showers along the northern, western and southwestern coasts. Temperatures will dip to a lowly three degrees.

Wednesday will be better - Met Eireann are forecasting a dry day in most areas with a few sunny spells.

Altantic coastal counties will be cloudier and will experience patchy rain or drizzle, with temperatures ranging between 12 and 15 degrees.

The weather is expected to remain dry for the remainder of week - but patchy rain and drizzle will be experienced in some areas, particularly along the Atlantic.

Thursday and Friday are expected to remain the same, although temperatures are predicted to climb to the high teens.

This weekend will see little change. It will be mostly dry with a few sunny spells, but predominantly cloudy. Temperatures will range between the mid and high teens with light winds.
