Gardai are carrying out planned searches of a lake as part of an investigation into a woman who has been missing for over 31 years.

Members of the garda water unit began the searches near the home of missing mother-of-seven Barbara Walsh on Thursday morning.

Ms Walsh was married with a young family when she went missing from her home in Rusheenamanagh, Carna, Co Galway in 1985.

The disappearance of the 33-year-old was reported on June 22 that year at around 4am, the early hours of the morning.

A full review of this case was launched in January 2015 as part of an ongoing review of all missing persons in the Galway Garda Division.

The new investigation involved the appointment of a senior investigating officer and the establishment of an incident room.

Some 112 lines of enquiry have been generated and close to 60 people have been interviewed in the course of this review.

The Garda Technical Bureau have been assisting gardai with searches of the lands.

Gardaí are continuing to appeal for anyone who may have any information into the disappearance of Barbara, to contact them at Clifden Garda station on 095 22500, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
