GARDAÍ have launched a major investigation into an aggravated burglary at the home of a man in his 80s on Arranmore Island.

The victim was attacked at his home at Ballintra on the Co Donegal island last night.

Gardai believe the attacker may still be on the island as it took place at 8pm after the last sailing to the mainland pier at Burtonport, said Gda Supt David Kelly.

The victim was “man-handled” and a sum of money taken, he said.

He was left "shaken" by the incident.

In a statement today the Arranmore Island Community Council said: "Due to the sensitivity of the ongoing investigation, the incident itself which took place on Arranmore Island on the evening of Tuesday 1st March will not be discussed publicly at this time by the islands representative bodies.

“However, this crime is unprecedented and understandably the community are shocked and appalled and will be pulling together as much as ever to ensure such an incident is a one off.

“We have a proud tradition of looking out for one another on Arranmore Island, especially the more vulnerable in our community, and such an incident will only go to strengthen that community ethos.”
