Gardai have evacuated 18 homes in Dundalk after a suspected pipe bomb was found in a front-garden.

The device was noticed by a passer-by who alerted gardai earlier this evening - with the scene still sealed off.

It is understood that the army bomb squad have been alerted to the incident and are expected to arrive in the area shortly after 9pm.

The device was found at the front driveway of a house at Ashling Park, with the area now sealed off within around 100 yards.

"At around 5.45pm a suspected device was found in the driveway of a house," a garda spokesman said.

"The area was evacuated and the army EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) have been requested," he added.
