Gardai appeal for witnesses following brutal assault of elderly man (87) in home robbery

Gardai have appealed for witnesses following an aggravated burglary at the home of a pensioner on Wednesday night.

The 87-year-old man was hospitalised with serious head injuries after three men broke into his home in Co Wicklow and beat him.

The masked men assaulted the elderly man with what is believed to be an iron bar after they entered his home at Ballynultagh, Shillelagh.

He shares the home with his partner but was alone in the property when the gang forced their way in shortly after 9pm.

The culprits threatened the man and escaped with a sum of cash and some jewellery before gardai were alerted.

All three men have been described as being of average height and in their 20s and 30s, two with a slim build and one with a stocky build.

The injured man is currently in hospital where is condition is described as stable.
