Gardaí probe organised crime link to couple's disappearance
Gardaí fear for the safety of a couple who have been missing for the past week.
Dublin man William 'Willie' Maughan (34) and his 21-year-old Lithuanian girlfriend, Anna Varslane, were last seen between 2pm and 3pm on Tuesday, April 14, in the Gormanstown area.
Security sources revealed they are investigating a possible connection between the disappearances and an organised crime gang.
Sources close to Mr Maughan, a father-of-two, have also claimed that he had information about a gang suspected of being responsible for a murder.
The missing man, who had a drugs problem, was not involved in serious crime.
However, he was associated with the prime suspect for the murder of a man last year.
Gardaí do not believe Mr Maughan had any involvement in the attack but fear he may have been abducted by the gang because they thought he knew too much. The leader of the gang is heavily involved in the drugs trade.
Officers are also investigating Mr Maughan's association with another highly dangerous criminal from south west Dublin.
The couple had been living in a mobile home on land adjoining Rockleigh House, in Gormanstown, for a few months.
Mr Maughan, who is originally from Tallaght, West Dublin, was reported missing by his family on April 14. He had arranged to meet his mother at Rockleigh House after she had travelled from Tallaght.
When her son wasn't there she became concerned.
Ms Varslane, who has no family in this country since the death of her mother, has also been reported missing.
Gardaí have carried out a number of searches, including a large area of land around Murphy's Quarry, in Gormanstown.
Mr Maughan's family are described by sources as "very respectable and decent" who have tried to help him beat his drug addiction.
A source said: "His parents and family are heartbroken and while they are thinking the worst they are praying for the best.
"It is a nightmare for them."
Gardaí from Laytown and Ashbourne are investigating.
Mr Maughan is described as 5ft 8" in height, of athletic build, with brown shaved hair and green eyes.
