The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) is investigating a crash in which a Garda was injured when his motorcycle collided with a van.

He had been en route to the scene of an earlier accident when the incident occurred on the N59 Maam Cross to Oughterard road yesterday morning.

A man and a woman were taken to University Hospital Galway following the earlier collision on the N59 between Clifden and Oughterard.

The head-on crash happened shortly before 7am, on the Oughterard side of Maam Cross, and involved two cars.

The drivers of both vehicles were taken to University Hospital Galway, with serious injuries, although they are not life threatening.

The garda motorcyclist was taken to hospital following a collision with a van about three miles from the original crash.

His condition has been described as stable.

A GSOC spokesperson said it would examine the circumstances that led up to the accident.
