Garda arrested on suspicion of sex assault offences
A garda has been arrested after he was accused of sexually abusing his own children, it has emerged.
A spokesman confirmed that the officer, aged in his 40s, was arrested on Monday for "alleged sexual assault offences".
The suspect was detained at a station in the South East of the country under the provisions of Section 4 – Criminal Justice Act 1984.
He was later released without charge and a file will now be prepared for the information of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The Irish Daily Star is reporting that the abuse claims came to light after a female relative made a formal complaint to gardaí several months ago.
A source told the newspaper that the assault was being taken seriously.
Last year it emerged that a garda in a separate division was being investigated over the alleged sexual assault of a young girl.
He had earlier been investigated over the alleged rape of an adult woman. The DPP directed that there be no prosecution in this case but the investigation into the alleged assault on the minor is ongoing.
