Gang of raiders who made off with €1m worth of jewellery in custody
A GANG of raiders who made off with an estimated €1m worth of jewellery after an armed robbery at a store in Galway remain in custody tonight.
The four masked men entered Hartmann’s Jewellers on Shop Street in the city at 10.45am yesterday. One of the gang held what appeared to be a firearm.
The gang threatened staff before making off on foot with a substantial amount of jewellery including watches. The value of the goods stolen is believed to have been around the €1m mark.
In a follow up operation Gardai arrested four men in Galway city. All property was recovered and an imitation firearm was also recovered.
All four men, who are in their 30s, were brought to Galway Garda Station where they were held under Section Four of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. They can be held for 24 hours.
While no staff were injured during the incident, staff are understood to have suffered from shock.
