Fire fighters from Dolphin's Barn, Phibsborough and DFB headquarters joined forces to battle the blaze at the former Rialto cinema.

The adverse weather conditions, namely the gale force winds, hindered the efforts of respondents.

"The building was a former cinema, our turntable ladder is made down as a water tower along with 3 pumps. A lot of smoke in the area," the fire service tweeted.

Shortly after 8pm this evening, the DFB reported that the blaze had been brought under control.

However, the brigade units still remain at the scene and traffic on approach to St James' Hospital is delayed.
