Health Minister Simon Harris has described becoming a first-time father as "overwhelming".
The minister's wife Caoimhe gave birth to a baby girl, named Saoirse, at the National Maternity Hospital in Holles Street on Thursday.
He said being a father is now his "most important job" alongside a photograph posted on Instagram.
Mr Harris (32) told the Irish Independent he is "delighted" and that he is "happy beyond words".
"Caoimhe has been amazing. It's an incredibly exciting time for us and our family. I feel very blessed.
"I want to thank everyone for their good wishes," he said.
The Wicklow TD is not taking paternity leave at this stage but intends to spend as much time as possible with the newborn.
He has curtailed his diary to essential meetings, including the Cabinet, for the next fortnight. The minister married Caoimhe, a cardiac nurse, in July 2017.
